One of the obvious challenges to balancing in the winter is the subzero air and freezing water… requires a meditation in and of itself… my tools consist of layers, chest high waders, and ice-fishing gloves. Despite the extreme conditions, there is a certain magic with the snow and ice.. things get stuck to each other as with this top rock and the branch frozen nicely over top of it… something who’s present state can be unraveled into all the time and context that went into its being..
I love the idea that each rock balance image tells a story… it is a captured moment, but with infinite moments deduced through the process… then when all the other elements are thought of (ex: practiced skill, time to build, finding each part, fading sunlight, freezing air and constant snowfall.. ), there forms a string of infinite variables which all align into this moment in balance.. :)

I love observing the evolution of Fall into Winter… as the leaves slowly blow away in the wind… The changing of a feeling… colors fading to brown.. and still… the balance sits quietly content with the environment… no grasping… admiring each leaf’s fall through the air into the cleansing creek flow… <3
As i observe the changes and nature’s letting go, I have a renewed inspiration to dance with the change… creating my land art and observing the energy play of my creations with envirnoment..
This is a close up of a creek rock I balanced today… beautiful textures and colors… I think it is a little funny to think that most people don’t think twice about the details of rocks… Sure some are more energetic than others… but for the most part, I can leave a rock almost anywhere and it will stay… no one will touch it… except me and possibly a few other rock balancers I know. :P
I have a growing collection of small rocks accumulating at home… so many times I pick up small rocks, especially wet from the creek, and looking closely reveals brilliant textures and imperfectly harmonious color schemes. wabi-sabi.
Yesterday I made a visit to Boulder Creek… the place I learned to balance, honing my skills through endless practice. My first awe-moment was to see just how torn apart the creek became… Huge boulders taken downstream, often out of sight, during the flooding in September… some rock areas wiped out completely… It’s amazing to contemplate the energy that ran through here… And to think of the other extreme; all the times I balanced gardens that stood in place each afternoon and sunset… learning magic through stillness…
I sat… observing the brilliant leaves…. the lush calm of a renewed boulder creek.. energy as fresh as ever.. I breathed long, deep breathes.. feeling rejuvinated.. I felt the usual strong urge to balance… so I gathered rocks and began playing with angles, learning the axis of each potential stone and contemplating possibilities. weaving the most unlikely threads of gravity.
I imagine this balance as a gift for the new energy in the creek… more imperfect.. more beautiful… ♡ The visit filled me with more renewed energy… Beautiful moments such as these often move me to tears… “lacrime di felicità.”
Boulder Creek; an excellent AND accessible place to dance with infinity. zen. nature. whatever you choose to call it.
“My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddlestrings and harps, drums and tamboura I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.”
~ Fernando Pessoa
although this balance looks simple… it is an example of multidimensional counter-point-balance.. :) the thread of gravity is less than hairline… all anchored by the immense relative weight of the top rock. i can’t explain how i did it… I just DID. and when it locked into balance.. the feeling was excellent.. <3
Something I am extremely happy about now is the growing emergence of leaves surrounding the creek.. .the leaves contrast the reds and oranges in the rocks in a most perfect way…
“I wish I could transmit this experience through
American urban radio and whorehouse shopping malls…
To Wallstreet executives and stay-at-home moms…in the bible belt…
Just to say HEY!
Look at the world, and get off your block…
Pick up a book… STOP. WATCHING. THE CLOCK.
There’s so much more to learn than trades… and monolingual grades…to be sure.
This ride is special. This countryside is ancient.
And many of these things, I do not understand…
But I feel like I’ve been here before…
This Ride… The thoughts that come with it.. Tell me to cherish life NOW
Because the only gift really given to you is the present.
The only gift really given to you is RIGHT NOW.”
